Roof edge
Date: 12/20/2006
Work on sealing the roof edge has gotten underway. Visible is the untreated area to the left of the Gyralight compared to the treated area beyond that.
Sealing of the roof edge
Date: 12/20/2006
After hammering the affected area flat, wire brushing, cleaning and taping the hole closed, Kool-Seal - a paint-on roofing product - was brushed on after which reinforcing netting was added.
Second coat of sealant applied
Date: 12/20/2006
After sufficient drying time (somewhat over 1 hour) another layer of Kool-Seal was applied fully embedding the reinforcement netting creating a water-tight seal of the affected area.
Observation end roof condition
Date: 12/20/2006
Clearly visible is the extensive area affected. The round end of the roof is in the worst condition. Sealing it will prevent further decay until permanent repairs can be made.
All sealed
Date: 12/20/2006
With the second layer of Kool-Seal applied the roof edge already looks a lot better but more importantly, the interior is now safe from the elements. Also visible are the many areas of the body with chipped paint.
Second folding step opened up
Date: 12/20/2006
With some 'gentle' nudging the second folding step was made to work making access to the car a lot easier.
Roll over strut
Date: 12/20/2006
This folding step turns out to have a different type of roll over strut than the other side. Old mounting holes still visible indicate that this is not the original type. The door doesn't funtion as well as on the other side either (even when considering both have problems in their movement due to bulging rust areas).
Gyralite housing
Date: 12/20/2006
A new bolt on the door, a gasket and caulk around the door edge and caulk around the glass are now protecting the interior from more water damage. This was one of the main areas where water was getting into the car.
Gyralite housing
Date: 12/20/2006
Now, all we need is a Gyralite...
Bad repair patch
Date: 12/20/2006
The old repair patch that was closed with screws at an earlier date had opened up again. I decided not to use screws again but instead fill the edge with a rubber foam gasket and sealing that in turn with roofing caulk. Not a great looking repair but effective as a temporary measure.
Large patch cover
Date: 12/20/2006
After six months the patch cover has held up perfectly.
2x4 removed
Date: 12/20/2006
One of the last outside remnants of Andy's Tukwila Station Restaurant has been removed: a rotted 2x4 screwed to the roof above the roof vent. The remaining holes were caulked. One less hazard for during the move.
Belt rail rust
Date: 12/20/2006
Most of the paint on the top edge of the belt rail has chipped off or was found to be cracked. Rust has started to form. To prevent the rust from doing more of its distructive work the area was scraped and wire brushed after which the area was painted.
Belt rail painted
Date: 12/20/2006
The area is covered again with paint and safe until more permanent repainting can be done.
Patch painting in progress
Date: 12/20/2006
Rusted areas of the body were sanded, cleaned and painted.
Looking better
Date: 12/20/2006
The area between the two patches is already starting to look better. The yellow striping will be redone to make the car look somewhat decent.
Stenciling
Date: 12/20/2006
Visible is the 'Do not hump or kick' warning stenciled on the side. The 'Moving with out of date air brakes per F.R.A.' was added earlier and is necessary for the move to a shop where the necessary brake work (COT&S) will be done.
Cracked windows taped up
Date: 12/20/2006
Cracks in the vandalized windows were covered with duct tape to hold them together until they can be replaced.
Duct tape
Date: 12/20/2006
Lots of duct tape was used to stabalize the cracked windows. Roofing caulk was also used where gaps had formed between the window gaskets and the car body (visible at the window on the left).
Small patch
Date: 12/20/2006
The pier panels on both sides of the smaller hole were removed to inspect the area for repair. On the back of the (rotted) plywood panels remnants of the original gold Kalistron covering were found. Apparently during the remodeling at Andy's the original covering with the beautiful State silhouettes and Seals were just plainly cut off. I wonder if anyone saved them?
Post at small patch
Date: 12/20/2006
Visible is that the post was not touched during the 'creation' of the smaller hole. Repairs should therefor be fairly straightforward here. Also visible is the insulation blanket in the wall and the conduit for the attendant-call button.
Air-conditioning duct
Date: 12/20/2006
The air-conditioning duct opens up into the interior. Two doors hinge down to gain access to the duct. The perforated door on the left is the one visible in the interior. Its many small holes admit air into the interior. The door on the right forms the bottom part of the duct and has two adjustable openings through which air can be let through. Both doors are secured with screw-type quick disconnect fasteners.
Duct interior
Date: 12/20/2006
Looking towards the round end of the car the entire duct is still intact. Apparent is also that the hole in the roof did not only admit water into the duct but also birds and insects. The duct will need a thorough cleaning and possible repainting.
Looking better
Date: 12/20/2006
Basking in the sun St. Nicholas Mountain is already looking better with a sealed roof edge and paint touch-ups.
